An Islamic mortar with animal head handles

Engraved cast bronze, with remnants of red pigment, some verdigris due to corrosion. Cylindrical mortar with protruding upper and lower rims. The body decorated with two rows of three prunts amid engraved tendrils and similar foliate scrolls around the rims. A casting flaw in the base, the ring-shaped bail lost. H 10.3, D 15.2 cm, weight c. 4.1 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan/Iran, 13th - 14th C.
