A single-handled mortar with animal motifs

Golden brown cast bronze with fine chocolate brown patina. Tapering mortar with protruding base, flaring rim and bail handle. Decorated with a coat-of-arms monogrammed “FR” beneath fleur de lys supported by two griffins and flanked by a stag, a hunting dog, a rabbit and the initials D C with a bell between. The rim decorated with a band of raised foliage. H 10.2, D 15.3 cm, weight c. 3 kg.
Northern Italy or France, 16th C.
