A sumptuous Russian silver Gospel book

Sumptuous book cover with cast silver clasps resting on four bun feet. The front cover decorated with a palmette frieze surrounding a depiction of Christ's resurrection in an oval plaque within an aureola studded with foil-backed paste stones. The angles decorated with stone set palmettes and four plaques depicting the Evangelists. Between them cherub's head appliqués and a depiction of God with the dove of the Holy Spirit. The back cover with corresponding decoration and a plaque with a depiction of Christ handing the heavenly keys to St. Peter. The spine decorated with an embossed depiction of the tablets of the Arc of the Covenant, the menorah, the brazen serpent, a Eucharistic chalice and the Eye of Providence. Containing a church Slavonic edition of the so-called Ostromir Gospels from the time of Tsar Nicholas I. H 10; L 51; W 36 cm.
