An ivory netsuke of a hare with a biwa-fruit. Second half 19th century

Signed: Ranboku
Nibbling on a thick biwa which it holds between its paws. The stylised large leaves inlaid in black horn, the eyes in coral.

Meinertzhagen and Lazarnick both list Ranboku as a carver. However, both the depiction of the hare with biwa and the long slit-like ears recall the works of Ranichi.
Height 2.9 cm

Provenance

Estate of Countess Rechberg, Munich, acquired at Flachsmann, Kronberg, 12.11.2000 (invoice available)
