A rare Koblenz silver sugar box

Ovoid vessel with pierced Neoclassical decor resting on four supports. With an opaque blue glass inset and a domed lid decorated with stiff foliage. H 12.5; W 13; D 9.2 cm, weight of silver 198 g.
Marks of Stephanus Goswein, circa 1800.

The box was made in Koblenz during the period of French occupation between 1794 and 1814. An interesting detail is that Stephanus Goswein apparently had to overlap his original quatrefoil maker's mark with the diamond-shaped mark prescribed by the French administration.
