A South Italian Nativity scene with three figures

Made from various materials including gilded softwod, terracotta, cork, silver plated metal and papier maché. Figure of Jesus lying in the manger, Mary and Joseph before an architectural backdrop on a gilded acanthus base. H architecture 74, W ca. 65, D ca. 32 cm. Joseph H 45 cm, with a plexiglass case.

The Bavarian National Museum houses a large collection of Nativity scenes, including one with numerous figures produced in Naples in 1750 to 1790 that includes not only the Nativity itself, but also the annunciation to the shepherds and the magi alongside a vast array of Neapolitan peasant characters.
