A carved ivory relief with a dionysian procession

Carved ivory plaque depicting ten dancers in a landscape accompanied by musicians. H 13.8, W 25.3 cm.
Attributed to the circle of Giovanni Battista Pozzi, first third 18th C.

The attribution of a certain group of similar reliefs to the circle of the Roman ivory carver and medal caster Giovanni Battista Pozzo (around 1670 - 1752) was first suggested by Christian Theuerkauff based on a relief that was still in the collection of the Duke of Portland in Welbeck Abbey in 1932. Jutta Kappel supplemented the attributions with further pieces from the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig and the Green Vault in Dresden, also with Ovidian themes.
