A Parisian plated bronze figure of Sappho

Silver plated and gilt bronze sculpture depicting the Greek poet with a lyre on a tiered pedestal beside a column with a sacrificial dish and scroll. The column signed "J. PRADIER 1848", and stamped VP with a crown. H 44.8, W 20.2, D 18 cm, on a dark green marble base H 53, W 28.8, D 24 cm.
The model by Jean Jacques (James) Pradier, 1848, the cast by Victor Paillard, around / after 1851.

This important bronze figure by the Swiss sculptor James Pradier (1790 – 1852) was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1848. The original is today housed in the collection of Queen Elisabeth II in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Other versions were presumably produced at the same time as or for presentation at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and were realised by the Parisian bronze caster Alexandre Victor Paillard (1805 - 1886).
