Ignaz Hillebrand

A carved ivory relief with the martyrdom of Saint Andrew by Ignaz Hillebrand

Carved from several separate pieces. This expressive and finely crafted pierced relief depicts the Apostle Andrew bound to a rough cross being crowned by an angel which hovers above him. The background is formed by schematically rendered clouds and rocky ground. Numerous works by Ignaz Hillebrand have survived ranging from 1719 to 1760, allowing this piece to be stylistically dated to around 1730–40.
In good overall condition, very minor discolouration. Mounted on a modern wooden back panel. Height of main figure 20.5 cm. Height of entire relief 28.5 cm.

Provenance

South German private collection.
