1992

Famous for delving into different media, the Swiss artist John Armleder has created paintings, pour paintings, furniture sculptures and integrated various objects into his presentations. His career spans five decades which he devoted to constantly reinventing and honing his artistic expression. In the early 1960s - through a mutual interest in American composer and writer John Cage - he briefly connected with members of the fluxus movement. A genre that has influenced his style ever since. John Armleder went on to participate in the Galerie Ecart performance group and to represent Switzerland at the Venice Biennale in 1986. Though his influences are clearly derived from Modernist and Conceptual ideas he never allowed himself to settle for one specific style. The work in the sale is a mirrored mosaic style masterpiece, which is reminiscent of his vast expansive installations. Drawing the viewer into his world, they are met with their own fractured reflection, whilst at the same time becoming part of the visual experience. This humorous abstraction runs through his oeuvre and is possibly the binding force behind his process.
