An Islamic mortar

Engraved cast bronze with red pigment and traces of sinter on the interior and base. With protruding base and rim. Decorated with calligraphic inscriptions in cartouche motifs amid tendrils in three sections separated by horizontal mouldings. The base and rim with calligraphic inscriptions separated by depictions of birds in medallions on hatched backgrounds. H 13, D 18.7 cm, weight c. 4.6 kg.
Attributed to Iran, presumably 14th C.
