A rare Baroque mortar made for Charles Lamirant

Golden brown, sharply cast bronze with slightly mottled patina (possibly with remnants of polychromy). Tapering mortar on a stepped moulded base. Decorated with several bands of moulding and fleur de lys and sage leaf reliefs surrounding a central "house mark" with the initials "C C L" above the foundry mark "ROUSSEL BENIGNE" surrounding a bell. Inscribed below the rim in Latin capital letters: "IE SVIS A CHARLES LAMIRANT". With minor dents around the edge. H 14, D 15 cm, weight c. 2.9 kg.
Attributed to France or Alsace, 1653.
