Probably Upper Rhine-Region around 1510/1520

A relief with the Adoration of the Magi, presumably Upper Rhine Region, around 1510/20

Carved wood, the reverse and sides flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. This finely carved relief depicts the Virgin seated in the left of the composition, holding the infant Christ in Her lap whilst he reaches for the gift proffered by the first of the Magi. On the right, the two other Kings are shown bringing a large gadrooned chalice. This pierced relief is thought to have originally formed part of an altarpiece with scenes from the Life of the Virgin.
The right hand of the younger King missing. With some vertical hairline cracks and minor wear. 23 x 22 x 4 cm.

Provenance

Former Julius Böhler art dealership, Munich (with a label on the underside).
