Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

Classical Scene

Watercolour and pen and black ink. 21 x 23.5 cm.

When Tischbein lived in Italy, primarily in Naples, from 1779 - 1799, his art was influenced by the imitation of antiquity. Apart from illustrating Homer's epics, he made the acquaintance there of the British antiquarian Sir William Hamilton, whose extensive collection of ancient vases he catalogued, traced and published from 1791 - 1795 in the four volume "COLLECTION OF ENGRAVINGS/FROM ANCIENT VASES/[...]", the so-called "Vasenwerk". For the redrawings, he chose a classical style of outlining by providing the figures with fine contours and delicate colouring. The present "Antique Scene" was probably created in the context of the "Vasenwerk".

We would like to thank Prof Dr Hermann Mildenberger for his kind support in cataloguing this lot.
