This atmospheric and delicately coloured pen-and-ink drawing shows a late summer landscape, presumably near Tischbein's home in Eutin in Schleswig-Holstein. Framed by two knarled trees, our view follows a flat landscape reaching out into the horizon. In the centre of the picture on the right we see a cow and a cart loaded with hay. Two peasant figures, only hinted at, are about to load the cart even further. In the foreground a child is gathering fruit lying on the ground at the foot of a tree, placing it into a wicker basket.
