Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

Portrait of a Girl facing left
30th October 1778

Black chalk on paper, mounted on a second sheet of paper. 42 x 32.7 cm.
Dated lower right: 30. October.

Tischbein's carefully executed chalk drawing shows an adolescent girl with upswept, curly hair. Fine cross-hatching on the neck, right cheek and temple lend the portrait a a three-dimensional appearance. The curls are rendered in a broader stroke, softly framing the face and providing dynamism. According to Mildenberger, the portrait still reveals stylistic traces of Tischbein's initial training in France under his uncle, the "Kasseler Tischbein" Johann Heinrich Tischbein (Mildenberger 1985, p. 56). The Landesmuseum Oldenburg houses the slightly improved, coloured second version (c. 1779, coloured chalk on grey laid paper, 471 x 378 mm).

Enclosed: A whole sheet, handmade paper, grey toned, in someone else's handwriting a manuscript on Apollo with a handwritten marginal addition by JHW Tischbein (beginning of text: "Apollo der schönste Gott von allen...").
