In the late 18th century, Charles-Louis Clérisseau was one of the most important artists and intellectuals to whom we owe the emergence of Neoclassicism. In the field of architecture in particular, his drawings of antique buildings and ruins provided the decisive impetus for the style that was to influence architecture throughout Europe, Imperial Russia and the United States around 1800.
