August Anton Tischbein
Portrait of three Children on a Terrace with a View of Triest
Oil on canvas (relined). 85 x 98 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: A. Tischbein. 1840.
August Anton Tischbein depicts the three children, presumably siblings, with the youngest in a basketweave pram, on a terrace sheltered by trees with the harbour of Triest in the background. The infant is flanked by an older boy in a pale blue outfit and a girl in a pink dress. The rake leaning against the balustrade and the straw hat on the ground below it evoke the idea that the children have been interrupted in gardening, which further emphasises the idyllic, light-hearted mood of the piece.
The portrait's author, August Anton Tischbein, came from the famous family of artists with origins in Haina in Hessia. Following his training at the academies of Berlin and Dresden and his time as a journeyman, during which he travelled to Holland, London, Switzerland, and Southern Italy among many other places, he finally settled in the Habsburg terretory of Triest, where this charming portrait was made.
