Eduard Wilhelm Pose was among the most well-known landscape painters of the Düsseldorf School. At the Düsseldorf Academy, he was a pupil of Schirmer and a friend of Friedrich Lessing and Andreas Achenbach. With the latter he left the academy in 1836 and moved to Munich, where he worked under Carl Rottmann. Pose soon succeeded in taking part in international exhibitions, including one in Brussels in 1839. King Leopold I of Belgium bought one of his paintings on that occasion. From his Frankfurt period, which began in 1845 with his move to the city on the Main, it was above all his private connection with Gustave Courbet that attracted attention. Courbet's magnificent painting "Dame de Francfort", today in the Wallraff-Richartz Museum in Cologne, is said to depict Pauline, Eduard Pose's wife. There is some evidence for an alleged love affair between Courbet and Pauline Pose.
