This detailed watercolour is a replica by the artist of his eponymous painting from 1862 now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (102 x 126 cm). At the time of its creation, Israels had returned to Holland after several years of training in Paris and was living in The Hague. It is a characteristic work of his mature period, in which he primarily depicted realistic scenes from the lives of the so-called common people, with their worries and joys.
