Portrait of Ferdinand of Austria, Cardinal Infante of Spain and Archbishop of Toledo

Oil on canvas (relined). 139.5 x 106 cm.

The depiction draws on Van Dyck's portrait of Ferdinand of Austria in the Prado, Madrid (inv. no. 1480) from 1634, after which several copies were made, some of which are attributed to his workshop. In contrast to the prototype in the Prado, the present version shows a landscape background that has yet to be identified. This probably has a historical reference, comparable to the portrait of Ferdinand of Austria in the Musée du Mont-de-Piété in Bergues (F), in which Ferdinand presents himself in full figure as a general against the background of the Battle of Nördlingen. This full-length portrait was originally a knee-length piece that was subsequently enlarged.
