A wood figure of Buddha Amithaba. Tibet. 18th/19th century

The transcendent buddha sits in vajravajrasana on a lotus throne, above an angular pedestal supported by a pair of lions. In his hands, placed flat on top of each other in dhyanamudra, he originally held an alms bowl. The robe shows a floral decoration in gold lacquer. The separately carved aureole of tendrils is set into the base behind the figure. Dark painted wood with remnants of colours and gilding.
