Malachite became increasingly popular as a medium following the completion of the malachite room in the St. Petersburg Hermitage for Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna (Charlotte of Prussia, 1798 - 1860). It was used in many of the highest-quality artistic products to be made in Russia and was also used in the decoration of the Kremlin. For the production of larger items, it was usual for smaller fragments of the mineral to be applied as a symmetrical veneer to a carrier material.
