France ca. 1400

A French carved boxwood figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1400

Carved in the round. With minimal remains of former polychromy. Depicting the Virgin standing in a gently swaying pose on a flat plinth. She holds the Christ Child, shown with an orb, to one side over Her hip. The Virgin is crowned and clothed in a veil and floor-length gown, which is largely obscured by the drapery of Her cloak. The fine quality of this piece is especially evident in the masterful depiction of the drapery. The hardness of the boxwood used to carve this piece has also allowed the sculptor to render details such as the Child's hair in extraordinary detail.
The Virgin's separately attached right hand missing. Vertical hairline cracks. A thin, filled vertical crack to the reverse. Minimal wear throughout. Height 65 cm.

Provenance
