"If there are still people in the photo scene who appreciate sharp irony and intelligent wit, they will be thrilled by this exhibition," wrote Ullrich Tillmann in 1984 in the press release for the first exhibition of "Meisterwerke der Fotokunst. Sammlung Tillmann und Vollmer" in the 'Gallery without a Gallerist' founded by Tillmann in Cologne. The 'masterpieces' gathered here are re-created or adapted photographs that refer to famous works in the history of photography: Albert Renger-Patzsch (cf. lot 528), Ansel Adams, André Kertesz, August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher or Duane Michals are represented here in a parodic manner.
The exhibition, which in its original conception comprised 30 works, was shown in various museums and exhibition contexts in the following years, in some cases expanded by individual works. Overall, very few prints were made of the works; the total number of 15 prints of each motif was not exceeded in any case.
