A rare umimatsu kiseruzutsu. Mid-19th century

Of senryû-zutsu type. Carved as a kuronbojin standing on a rock, holding a coral branch in his right hand, the left one held to his head. Both the barnacles applied to the rock and the eyes inlaid in ivory, the eye pupils double inlaid in black and brownish horn. The right arm slightly bent thus forming the himotôshi. Signed Minko. Chipped.
Length 22.1 cm

Another umimatsu kiseruzutsu signed Minko and showing a kuronbojin was in the former Duncan Beresford-Jones collection, auctioned at Christie's, London, 7.6.2000, lot 41. Whether the two pipe cases were actually made by Minko (1735-1816) or perhaps by Ikko (active 1840-1860), who according to Meinertzhagen was a successor of Minko and made many fancy kiseruzutsu, is open for discussion.
