A Baroque Berlin silver candlestick

Square base with chamferred angles supporting a faceted baluster shaft. H 18.5 cm, weight 341 g.
Marks of Jaques Roman sen., c. 1730.

Jacques Roman appears to have received multiple commissions from the Prussian court. There are documented references to gueridons and girandoles produced by him for King Frederick William I in 1731/32, as well as a table with a silver figure of triton as its base commissioned by Frederick the Great in 1742. The price of 78 thalers for the table base was considered "enormous" at the time.

Provenance

From a Westphalian private collection.
