A pair of chairs
by Rudolf Fränkel (1901 - 1975)

Solid walnut, double wicker upholstery to the backrest, that of the seat partially replaced. H 80.5, W 52.5, seat depth 44.5 cm.
Early 1930s.

Rudolf Fränkel, who was born in Upper Silesia in 1901, set up his own business after completing his studies in Berlin. His best-known building from this period is the Lichtburg cinema. Forced to emigrate after 1933, his path led him first to Bucharest, then to London and finally to the USA. In all of his stops, he left behind significant, groundbreaking modern architecture in the New Objective style. In 1950, he began teaching at Miami University in Ohio. He died in Cincinnati in 1974.

The chairs presented here were probably originally part of a final set for a building in continental Europe before he fled to London.

Provenance

From an important European private collection.
