Central Rhine Region circa 1430

A Central Rhenish carved wooden pietà group, circa 1430.

Carved three quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. The polychromy probably 18th century. A figure of the Virgin dressed in a red gown and blue cloak, seated on a plain bench resting on a facetted plinth. She turns Her face mournfully towards the body of Her Son lain horizontally across Her lap. Christ is shown wearing the crown of thorns and covered in blood, which stands out sharply against His pale flesh. Bernhard Decker carried out in depth research into the origins of this expressive devotional image, eventually locating it convincingly to Mainz or Koblenz.
With minimal wear. Height 60 cm.

Provenance

From Oberlahnstein am Rhein, in family ownership since the 19th century by descent. - The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection, Francfurt.
