Probably Spain 19th century

A carved wood relief of the Adoration of the Magi, presumably Spain, 19th century

Wood, carved from three blocks, the kneeling king worked separately (with newer mounting). Relief set into the original box frame. Even polychromy. This relief depicts the adoration before a simply painted landscape. The composition, but especially the painted details of the relief, owe a great deal to 15th/16th century Spanish prototypes. However, the facial features, style of carving and the way in which the kneeling king has been worked separately and placed in front of the more bas relief background all reveal the piece to be a historicist work of the 19th century.
Visible joins. Wear throughout. The moulded wooden frame with its base, corner scrolls and roof tiles added after 1990/1991. 186 x 151 x 24 cm (with frame).

Provenance

Formerly Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck ( from collection of Dr. Krüger). - Auctioned by Neumeister 1990/1991 (as Spain 1st half 16th century). - Since then private collection in southern Germany.
