Probably South German late 15th century

A carved ivory figure of Christ Blessing, presumably Southern Germany, late 15th century

Carved in the round and on the underside, the reverse with a small smooth area for a seat. Depicting Christ enthroned and looking towards the viewer; His right hand raised in blessing, He also holds a chalice in His outstretched left hand, referring to the Eucharist. The high-quality ivory carving, designed for a frontal viewpoint, is particularly notable for the detailed observation of the folds of the long robe, which is surpassed only by the delicacy of the physiognomy and the locks of hair.
Two fingers of the blessing hand, one toe of the left foot and the tip of the right foot lost. Surface staining. Yellowing and labels on the reverse. Height 12 cm.
