A carved limewood figure of the kneeling Virgin from a coronation scene, attributed to Bartholomäus Steinle.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With older, partially overpainted polychromy. This figure of the Virgin is shown kneeling in prayer and facing the right, indicating that she originally belonged to a group depicting her coronation. The blending of the traditional late Gothic motif and early Baroque style in this work speaks for an attribution to Bartholomäus Steinle and his workshop in Weilheim, which dates the piece to 1615/1620.
The lower left terminal reattached. A short, horizontal crack to the thigh. With minor wear. Height 96 cm.

Provenance

According to tradition, the work originates from Benediktbeuren Monastery and was in possession of the Wolfratshausen and Bad Tölz families for five generations. - The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection, Frankfurt.
