The Ecclesiastical Hierarchy in Adoration of the Eucharist

The present oil sketch goes back to a commission from the Archduchess Clara Eugenia to Rubens. They are sketches for a series of tapestries that the Archduchess had produced for the convent "Las Descalzas" in Madrid according to these designs. An original oil sketch by Rubens with various scenes from this series is housed in the Art Institute in Chicago. The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest preserves an oil sketch of the scene depicted here, which is considered a contemporary copy.
