A rare Meissen-style famille rose plate. Qianlong period, around 1750-1760

Decorated in the center with a view of Rome. In the foreground the Tiber with the Ponte Sant'Angelo and Castel Sant'Angelo on the right. In the background St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. On the flag four cartouches with merchant scenes between tendrils. Small rim chips.
Diameter 22.7 cm

The motif is based on the copperplate engraving "Pons Aelius, Castrum que S. Michaelis, D. Petri Basilicam" by Pieter Schenk the Elder (1660 - 1711), published in Amsterdam in 1708. It is probably the only city view of Rome and the Vatican on Chinese export porcelain.
