A small boxwood netsuke of a recumbent boar. Nagoya. Mid-19th century

The forelegs held as if to rise, the head tilted and turned to the left, with finely incised hairwork of the fur and hairs above the eyes and to the sides of the muzzle. The eye pupils of black horn. Signed Itsuô tô (Hokyûdô Itsumin)
Height 1.8 cm; length 4.5 cm

The signature "Itsuô tô" translates "carved by the old man Itsu". Meinertzhagen added this signature by hand to his text on Itsumin, implying that the old man Itsu is Hokyûdô Itsumin (MCI, p. 245). See also the two signatures "Itsuô" listed under Itsumin in G. Lazarnick, Netsuke and Inro Artists, Honolulu 1982, pp. 526 and 527.
