St Cecilia at an Organ

Oil on canvas (relined). 111 x 84 cm.
Monogrammed lower left on the book: Ba f(ecit?).

A later inscription “J Boeijermans pinxit” on the organ case was removed during a recent cleaning. The picture cannot be attributed to the Antwerp painter Theodor Boeyermans (1620-1677) (as confirmed in writing by Bert Schepers, Rubenianum, October 2nd, 2023). The work is influenced by the style of Rubens and Van Dyck. The balanced, classical and calm composition and the "sentimental" expression of the beautiful female figure are reminiscent of the women painted by the Antwerp artist Cornelis Schut (1597-1655).

Provenance

South German private collection.
