Lothringen second quarter 14th century

A limestone figure of the Virgin and Child, Lorraine, second quarter 14th century

Carved in the round. With minimal remains of former polychromy. Standing figure of the Virgin carrying Christ in Her left arm over Her extended hip. The Virgin wears a crown over a veil, and presumably would have held a sceptre in Her now lost right hand. The figure of the Child has only survived in a fragmentary state. He lacks shoulders, head, right hand, and left hand, in which He originally held a bird. Comparison with other sculptures from Lorraine exhibited in Saarbrücken in 2006, especially the "Virgin and Child" from the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe (inv. no. V 19591), allow the piece to be dated to the second quarter 14th century.
The Virgin's nose replaced, a filled diagonal crack through the shoulder and neck. Wear throughout. Height 66 cm.

Provenance
