Franz Seraph von Lenbach

Portrait of Marion Lenbach

Oil on canvas (relined). 83 x 74 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: F Lenbach / 1897.

Lenbach's eldest daughter Marion (1892-1947) grew up with her father and his second wife Charlotte von Hornstein after his divorce from Countess Magdalena Moltke. The picture shows Marion, who is about 5 years old, sitting in a landscape. She is wearing a historical dress in the style of the late 18th century with a large feather-adorned hat. Lenbach was a proud and enthusiastic father and always liked to paint his pretty daughter in a variety of costumes. In this especially accomplished portrait, Lenbach was clearly taking cues from Gainsborough in terms of colouring and brushwork. There is also an almost identical, oval format portrait of his daughter dating from 1897 in the possession of the Neven DuMont family (see exhibition catalogue: Franz von Lenbach 1836-1904, Lenbachhaus Munich, 14th December 1986 - 3rd May 1987, Munich 1987, p. 347, fig. 185). The publisher's sons Alfred and Reinhold Neven DuMont are the sons of Lenbach's daughter Gabriele from his second marriage.
