Probably Bolognese School 17th century

St. Francis of Assisi and the Angel

Oil on canvas. 46.5 x 37.5 cm.

The composition of this painting is similar to several other versions of this theme, which was apparently popular in 17th-century Bologna, including in particular the similarly large work by Guido Reni in Bologna (Pinacoteca Nazionale, inv. no. 32531, formerly owned by Sir Denis Mahon) or works by Ludovico Carracci (Paris, Yves Mikaeloff Collection) and Guercino (Dresden, Gemäldegalerie, Alte Meister, inv. no. Gal. no. 356). Unusual in the present painting is the inclusion of Brother Leo, who is depicted in the lower right corner of the picture and otherwise appears more in the Stigmatisation of St. Francis.
