This work, created in the year 1973, pertains to the unmounted series of works called Dislocations to which Camille Graeser had devoted himself since the mid-60s. Within this series, the strict organisation of the picture is dispersed and allows individual elements to take on a spirited life of their own.
“The term Dislocations refers to compositions in which a small square breaks out of line and intrudes into a neighbouring field. A colourful row of four small squares lies along each axis that separates these two fields from one another; one, at times even two or three squares, break out of line, sinking into the bright neighbouring field. As if bodies of differing weights were immersed in still water, in each case, this sinking proceeds in very different ways. While isolated squares float just barely below the surface, others immediately sink down to the bottom, and while some remain attached to the lateral edge of the painting, others seem to be held back by neighbouring squares at the last moment. Sometimes they sink heavy as stones, sometimes they twist and turn in the new element as if rejoicing in their sudden liberation.” (Koella, Camille Graeser Werkverzeichnis, op.cit., p.149).
