A modernist bronze figure of a tiger. Late 20th century

Striding, with a small head and an open mouth, the long tail lowered, executed in a cubistic manner. Light green patina with tiny black specks. Engraved signature mark Sō. Tomobako inscribed on the lid: Tora (tiger) and signed Saegusa Sōtarō saku and sealed Sō.
Height 15 cm; length 34 cm

Sōtarō Saegusa (1911-2006) was born in Aji-cho, Kida-gun, Kagawa Prefecture. He graduated from the Metal Engineering Department of Kagawa Prefectural Technical School in 1930 and from the Sculpture School of Tokyo School of Fine Arts in Saegusa. He later worked as a professor at Nagoya University of Arts until he retired in 1986. His bronze works feature a variety of subjects that bring in abstract elements. After his retirement, Saegusa focussed on sculptures of animals.
