A wood netsuke of a frog on a taro leaf. 19th century

The frog sits with outstretched front feet on a taro leaf, the wide part of which is folded over. The back of the leaf is covered with fine veins in relief, the long stem forms the himotōshi. The large pupils of black horn. Signed Honpu in an oval reserve. Fine crack.
Height 2.8 cm; length 5.5 cm

The motif of the frog on a taro leaf was probably first carved by Tomiharu from Iwami province in the late 18th century. Honpu is a extraordinarily rare carver and hardly any netsuke exist by him. In the literature he is listed as an 18th century carver in ivory.
