An impressive and minumental limestone head of Bodhisattva Guanyin. 13th/14th century

The face with full cheeks, heavy eyelids and narrow eyes with engraved pupils framed above and below by a skin fold, under the short nose a small mouth with full lips, the round chin marked by a line, the fleshy earlobes broken off. The thick strands of hair are arranged in axial symmetry; above the forehead with its protruding urna, two strands curl into a spiral. On the head sits a high lobed crown with a central Buddha seated in meditation on a lotus, raising his right hand in vitarkamudra whilst the left lies in his lap in meditation gesture, arising cloud to his sides. The lower border of the tiara is decorated with three elongated hexagons framed by hemispherical knobs, with undecorated flaps hanging down at the side. Head of the small Buddha reworked. On a metal stand.
