Making music in the park
Augsburg, third quarter 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments. Retouches to the upper third of the image. Carved softwood frame gilded over red bole, H 29, W 19.5 cm.

This reverse glass painting reproduces a mirror image of a composition by the Augsburg based engraver and miniaturist Johannes Esaias Nilson (1721 - 1788) entitled "Le Chant - Das Singen". Nilson's motif brought international attention to the Rococo style in Augsburg. The work was not only reproduced in reverse glass paintings, but also and especially by the German porcelain manufacturers. Following the death of his Swedish-born father, Nilson founded a publishing house for his prints in 1752. The Palatine Prince Elector Karl Theodor appointed him court painter in 1761.
This lot includes the original print.
