Six Berlin silver plates made for the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg

Round, scalloped plates with stylised acanthus and shellwork borders. Engraved in the centre with the crowned arms of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Stamped with inventory numbers 28, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33 on the undersides. Diameter 30 cm, total weight 5.341 g.
Marks of Johann George Hossauer, around 1837.

These plates come from a very extensive service that Grand Duke Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin commissioned from Hossauer in around 1837 - and which remained in Mecklenburg family ownership until the 1970s.

Paul Friedrich (1800 - 1842) was married from 1822 to Princess Alexandrine of Prussia, the sister of the future Emperor Wilhelm I. The designation "FIDC." next to the marks on the underside stands for Latin fidei commissum - entrusted to fidelity - and initially ruled out any sale or inheritance outside the family. The surviving parts of the service can now be found, among other museums, in the collection of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin.
