A faience dish with a soldier motif

Painted with a Roman soldier standing in a landscape with his back to the viewer. Unmarked. Some minor rim chips, a short round crack at 7 o'clock. Diameter 33.3 cm.
Delft or Frankfurt, around 1680 - 1700, after Hendrick Goltzius.

The painted decoration of this rare dish is based on a copperplate engraving published in 1586 by the Dutch artist Hendrick Goltzius from a series of ten sheets consisting of a title sheet, eight depictions of Roman heroes and a final sheet. Crockery decorated in this way was not intended for use, but as prestige objects for display and admiration.
