A Vienna globe table

Burrwood, fruitwood, oak and ebonised wood veneer on oak corpus, iron locks. Globe resting on corinthian column supports, the upper half forming the lid can be lifted back to reveal a miniature portico architecture and three lidded compartments concealing hidden drawers. With older restored shrinkage cracks and losses, the entire surface sealed with red varnish. H 97, diameter 53 cm.
Late 19th C.

Globe tables were one of the highlights of Viennese Biedermeier cabinetmaking. They were difficult to construct and only a few were made. However, as they contributed to the cabinetmaker's training as a draughtsman, many more designs for these tables exist.
