Hieronymus Janssens

Judith and Holofernes

Oil on panel. 64 x 47 cm.
Signed lower left: h. Janssens. fc.

Biblical themes such as the present painting with Judith and Holofernes are rather unusual in Hieronymus Janssens' oeuvre. The Antwerp master became known above all for his fondness for parties with music and dancing, which earned him the nickname "de danser" (the dancer). In addition to the silvery tone of his works, Janssens is characterised by his elegantly elongated figures, as we also encounter in the figure of Judith, who proudly presents the head of Holofernes.
