A Saxon carved wood figure of an Apostle, around 1270/1280

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. With remnants of older polychromy. A frontal depiction of a standing Apostle with a halo holding a book. Presumably one figure from a series of Apostles on a carved altarpiece.
The right hand and parts of the halo lost. Losses due to insect damage on the reverse. Wear throughout. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 29.5 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

Collection Dr. Hubert Wilm, Munich. - Sold in the 435th Lempertz auction, Cologne 3.12.1952, lot 30. - Passed on to the present owner by inheritance.
