Four early 16th century Flemish Figures of Apostles

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverses slightly flattened. With very deep round drilled holes on the undersides. Partially overpainted older polychromy. Four figures from a series originally depicting the twelve apostles, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The apostle Peter can be recognised by his attributes, a book and keys, whilst the young, beardless figure is evidently the apostle John. The two further figures are not clearly identifiable due to their missing attributes.
Wear with losses. The tip of one foot and one hand missing. Height of each 34 or 35 cm.

Provenance

Belgian private collection.
